Andi Lew is a qualified food, lifestyle and wellness coach who has been working with functional fitness athletes and their diets for several years. The Rx Review caught up with the published author recently to talk about fats and some natural fat alternatives for athletes!
Today we’re talking good fats!
Now good fats are those with EFA (essential fatty acids) in them. The key word in the phrase EFA is the word ‘essential’, so let’s talk about a couple of good, essential fats.
Good fats are things like coconut oil, tahini, of course you can get good fats from nuts and seeds, and coconut butter for those who don’t like cocont oil.
Now the reason why they are so good is because they actually help your hormones to function better which is very important in your training, and in every day life.
In the western world we all get told to eat low fat, low fat, low fat. But if low fat worked so well then we’d all be thin and healthy, and the reality is we’re not.
So start utilizing good fats in your diet to help you perform better, function better, make your hormones happier and get your nervous system functioning better.
The best essential fat to use is coconut oil because it isn’t carcinogenic when it’s heated up to a certain temperature, which means you can also fry with it.
