Firebird CrossFit is this week $10,000 richer after winning the inaugural “Dough to Grow Award” from Valpak.

The online contest for small businesses was run across North America. Although it was the retired 21-year military veteran, Lieutenant Colonel Chuck Markos and his affiliate that took out the honour.

“We are very thankful for this award,” says Markos. “The prize money is great, but the recognition is quite an honor. We think this award will get us through the front door of businesses we would like to partner with and onto bigger and better opportunities.”

After being introduced to CrossFit while deployed in Iraq in 2006, Markos went on to obtain his CrossFit Level 1 Certification in 2009.

After retiring from the military, Markos started his coaching his first client in a local park. Today his Mesa, Arizona affiliate has grown to over 100 clients.

Markos hopes to use the funds to purchase additional equipment and possibly hire new coaching staff.
