The 3 Steps To Getting Back to The Gym With A Wound

When you have a wound that requires care, the most important thing to do is keep it from getting infected. This can be a challenge if you are an avid gym goer since there is a lot of bacteria in the air. The risk of infection at the gym is very high. Does this mean you shouldn’t go to the gym until the wound is completely healed?

While that is the best idea, you can still go to the gym while it is healing. You just have to take care of it and do a few things to ensure that you don’t cause any harm to the affected area. In fact, with proper care and attention, exercising can actually aid in the healing process. In this article, we’ll explore tips and best practices for going to the gym when you have a wound.

1 – Keep it covered

It’s essential to protect a wound from germs and bacteria lurking around in a gym. To do that, you need to cover it up with sterile wound dressings or bandages and make sure it stays in place while you work out. 

If the wound is on a joint or an exposed spot, you can also use a protective wrap or brace to keep it safe from further harm. But be careful not to wrap it too tightly because that could slow the healing process by reducing blood flow. 

A bleeding wound might need a more absorbent bandage to keep it clean and dry. By taking these precautions, you can avoid infections and prevent more damage to the wound. And you can keep hitting the gym while your body does its thing and heals the wound.

2 – Change your routine

Although it can be tempting to power through the pain and stick to your usual workout regimen, it’s crucial to be careful about your exercises when you have a wound. Depending on the severity and location of the injury, certain activities may need to be modified or skipped entirely to avoid worsening the situation.

For instance, if you’ve hurt your hand, you may need to adjust exercises that involve gripping or pushing to steer clear of further harm. Pay attention to your body’s signals and notice any discomfort or pain while exercising. That way, you can make adjustments as needed and ensure that your wound can heal properly without any further damage.

3 – Give it some time

When you have a wound, it’s crucial to be patient and allow your body to heal properly. Returning to your regular gym routine too quickly can aggravate the wound and even slow the healing process. It’s essential to wait until the wound has started to heal before heading back to the gym.

That means holding off until the wound is no longer bleeding or has scabbed over. If your wound is more severe, it may be necessary to seek advice from a medical professional before resuming your workout routine.
