Chiropractic Care 101: How to Explain Like a Chiropractor

back pain crossfit

I know many people who flinch when they start talking about spinal manipulation. My know-it-all niece would often try to talk me out of seeing my chiropractor as she is horrified by the sound that the popping bones make. Any fears that she had were dispelled, however, after I took her to meet the chiropractor I was seeing.

Whenever you hear the word chiropractor, what kind of thoughts rush into your head and what is the general sentiment? Like my niece, you could be having a few fits of horrification upon hearing the word. Well, I don’t blame you as they didn’t exactly give the practice a name that’s easy on the ears. But that should all change the more you learn about the practice and completely replace the thought as you begin seeing one. Spinal manipulation, the bread and butter of chiropractic practice, is routine for a chiropractor. Under the good hands of a trained professional, you can expect to reap its great benefits.

Spinal Manipulation – The Chiropractor’s Craft

Let us first talk about what’s centric to the chiropractic practice and that is spinal manipulation. Put simply, a chiropractor would examine your spine and find out if there is something wrong with it in a series of tests and investigation. They’ll then plan out a suitable prescription for you that may involve exercises for you to do on your own. They also perform some direct manipulations, as well as tips on the way you stand, walk, sit, or lay down. The goal here is to extend your usual range of motion and try to untangle the nerves from the constant gnashing of your bones. You can rest assured knowing that Chiropractors have practically devoted their craft into properly carrying out these kinds of treatments and understanding the different kinds of problems that our spines have.

I talked about chiropractic practice with many people to know exactly what’s running through your mind right now. While they are generally skeptical about the practice as a while for whatever reason, there is always this need for them to understand how it all works. And this is quite understandable given that we are now in the age of information where, ironically, misinformation can spread like wildfire.

It is almost criminal to explain the practice as simply as I am about to but here it goes. The chiropractor would usually start applying pressure firmly using his or her hand with force coming from the arms. A sudden thrust is done on the joints that is the source of pain or discomfort. This deceivingly simple procedure can cause the vertebrae to release gas which we then hear as cracking. It should be noted however that every motion here is swift and powerful but careful and precise. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to ensure that it is done properly to prevent injury. At the exact moment of the pop, relief can be quickly felt and the mild discomfort is then lifted.

Chiropractor Expense

One reason why you have probably held out from going to a chiropractor is because of the horror stories you have heard regarding the expense. Some would even consider a regular visit to his or her chiropractor a luxury. In some areas, it’s true that it can be price,y but there is more to it than meets the eye. Like most medical services, there are ways around it for you to get the care that you need without having to break the bank.

If you are intent on having your spine fixed, then you ought to have medical insurance. I know the issue is a bit of a hot topic right now but spare me the politics. A lot of insurance companies offer coverage for a chiropractor at least once every year. The key is to find good deals and make sure there are more than a few options to choose from.

Finally, you should keep a lookout for chiropractor promotions because there can be quite a lot especially for clinics just starting out. Since there are quite a few of them competing against one another the prices can dip a bit. And that is how you can profit off of capitalism.

What to Do When You Visit Your Chiropractor

If you do decide to go through with your visit, you have to consider a few things. First of all, there is no reason for you to be afraid. Not only are the spinal manipulations done by chiropractors completely safe, they are also completely painless. One of the most frustrating things that is often hurled at chiropractors is they doubt their medical expertise. I can assure you that this is furthest from the truth. Chiropractors log quite a lot of hours studying. Not only the field of chiropractic care, but related medical science fields as well. They will put in hours of work studying anatomy, physiology, pharmacy and so much more.

If you are still reeling at the possibility of breaking the bank just to have your spine adjusted then you should rest assured that you will not have to see your chiropractor forever. Even after just a few sessions, you’d probably be good to go if what you needed were only minor adjustments. Be wary however as some do try to squeeze more money than necessary out of you but they are quite a few so just be prudent enough and watch out.

Finally, you do not have to go to a chiropractor just because you have back ache. The benefit of chiropractic sessions extend beyond just fixing your bad posture and relieving the symptoms from it. If you feel like there is a pain somewhere in your body and you and your doctors are at a loss in finding out the reason why, it wouldn’t hurt for you to pay your chiropractor a visit.
