Most of us could stand to get a little bit healthier. After all, your health is an important area in your life, and there’s always room for improvement. When it comes to health, two main factors play an important role: fitness and nutrition. However, there are so many contradicting articles out there, and so much information, that it can be quite daunting to know where to start if you’ve never been into that type of thing. Luckily, we’re here to help. We’ll be going through a few things that may make it easier for beginners to get started on their health and fitness journey. Remember, it is a journey, and you don’t need to dive into building strength via powerlifting straight away.

Eat healthier

Look, there are hundreds of diets out there. Keto and banting and military diets are just a few of the most popular ones. Some people insist that to be healthy, you need to be vegan or vegetarian. If any of these options work for you, then great, but you need to know that they are not always necessary. You don’t need to change your entire diet if you want to start focusing on nutrition. Simply make sure that you’re finding a healthy and sustainable balance. This means making sure to get enough protein, fruits, and vegetables into your body every single day. Another good option is to support natural food stores to make sure you’re not only eating processed foods all the time.

Focus on your steps

Most of us don’t have time to hit the gym twice a day, every single day. And, as you’ll see a bit later on, that’s not a great idea anyway. The truth is that many of us start getting unhealthy and unfit once we start working, since the majority of people work office jobs where they sit behind a desk for most of the day. This isn’t good at all. That’s why you should focus on getting in enough steps every day, whether that means going for a short walk around the block after work, or getting up every half an hour to stretch your legs. 

Drink enough water

If you’ve ever done any research about getting healthier and fitter, you’ve probably seen that almost every article will recommend drinking more water. In fact, you’re probably tired of hearing that at this point. But the truth is that everyone recommends it because it is such an important thing. Don’t be too hard on yourself

You’ve decided to live a healthier life, and that’s the first step. You should be proud of yourself! What you shouldn’t do, however, is beat yourself up every time you skip a workout day or have a piece of cake. Living a healthier life doesn’t mean you need to stop living. You should still have fun and eat food that you enjoy. Sometimes life gets a bit out of control, and we can’t focus on our health for a while. Once again, this is okay! Just be sure to get back on track as soon as you can. 

Use apps

A lot of people constantly put off their goals because they don’t know where to start. This is understandable – as mentioned, there are a lot of different sources and apps out there. Some good advice is to just pick one. If you don’t like it, you can always change it later. But apps are a great way to take some of the work out of being healthy. Fitness apps will help tailor workouts to your needs, and nutrition and diet apps can help you stay on track when it comes to eating. An added benefit is the fact that many apps have a community aspect to them so that you have people who can motivate you and keep you accountable.

Plan ahead

While living on a day-to-day basis is great, it’s not always the best approach when it comes to fitness and nutrition, especially if you’re a very busy person, or you struggle with motivation. You’re much more likely to achieve your goals if you plan your workouts for the week in advance. Another pro tip is to meal prep your meals – this way, you won’t be as tempted to grab an unhealthy option, because you know you’ve put in the time and effort to prepare a healthy meal for yourself.

Rest days are important

You might think that, when it comes to exercise, the more you do, the better. This is a common misconception, but the truth is that exercising too much can do nearly as much harm as exercising too little. Your muscles and body need time to recover, otherwise, you could get seriously injured, which would put you very far back in your fitness journey. Even if you love to exercise, it’s not sustainable to be working out at a high intensity every single day. If you really can’t stand doing nothing for a full day, try to implement some gentle movement into your rest days. A good idea would be some light stretching, or a gentle walk. It’s always important to listen to your body and take a break when needed, so be sure to look out for these signs that tell you to rest.

Find what works for you

As mentioned at the beginning of the post, you don’t need to do any one thing in particular to get healthy. As long as you’re putting good food in your body and getting some exercise, that’s all that matters. You don’t need to stop eating bread if you love it, or start jogging if you hate it. There are tons of different types of exercise; from yoga to cycling to at-home programs, so there’s no need to force yourself to do an exercise that you hate. And the same goes for food! Try different things until you find something that you enjoy, but that is also healthy.
